American blueberries are very popular on the Polish market. This is visible not only in its constant presence in shops, fairs and stalls, but also in the amazing prices offered by sellers. How to save money and enjoy lush blueberry bushes in your garden?

Blueberries are an excellent summer snack, and their prices are getting higher every year. It turns out that our climate is favorable for it and its cultivation is not the most difficult. So why should we overpay for fruit in supermarkets when we can grow it in our own garden?

Where to plant blueberries? All you need is good soil

Spring is the perfect time to plant blueberry bushes. The first step is to provide acidic soil with a pH (3.8-4.8) and a well-lit place. Blueberries also require a lot of water – it’s good to remember this from the very beginning, because without good hydration our chances for abundant fruit decrease. Once you have secured a suitable space, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Dig a hole with a depth of min. 40 cm and width approx. 80 cm. Plant blueberry bushes at a distance of 1 m.
  2. Plant the bush and water it thoroughly.
  3. Sprinkle 4-5 cm of pine bark mulch on top. This will ensure good soil pH and protect it from weeds.
  4. Water several times a week, but do not overwater. Control soil moisture.

It is worth planting its fruits not only for saving reasons. The kcal of a blueberry is only 57 per 100 grams, and its glycemic index is only 55. In addition to being an excellent snack, it also has many other benefits. These are:

  • lowering blood pressure,
  • improving intestinal function,
  • lowering cholesterol levels.

Moreover, blueberries are full of vitamins (A, C, E, K, B6) and minerals: magnesium, zinc, calcium and potassium. They also contain folic acid, riboflavin and niacin. In the kitchen, it can be used as an addition to desserts, breakfasts, preserves and even tinctures.
