The director of the Oscar-winning “Business Zone” is under fire from criticism. “You should be ashamed of yourself”

Jonathan Glazer received the Oscar for the best international film, which was named “The Zone of Interest” during the 96th awards ceremony. The director’s speech brought tears of emotion to some and outrage to others.

“Business Zone” is the latest work of Jonathan Glazer. The film tells the story of the commandant of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Rudolf Hoss, and his wife Hedwig, who live in a house with a garden right next to the camp. The film was awarded two Oscars.

The production was nominated for the prestigious nation in five categories and won two statuettes – for best sound and best international film. It is worth emphasizing that over a hundred Poles took part in the creation of Glazer’s work. The film receives very positive reviews from critics, but not everyone liked the director’s Oscar speech.

Glazer brought some of the audience to tears with his emotional speech. – Our film shows where dehumanization at its worst leads. And how it shaped our past and present – emphasized the creator of “Strefa Biznesu”.

– We oppose the use of our Jewish identity and the topic of the Holocaust to wrongly justify an occupation that has led to a conflict affecting so many innocent people, whether in the October 7 attack in Israel or the ongoing attack on the Gaza Strip. These are all victims of dehumanization – added the filmmaker and dedicated the picture to the “memory and resistance” of a Pole, Aleksandra Bystroń-Kołodziejczyk.

Glazer’s statement outraged members of the Holocaust Survivors’ Foundation USA. “In an open letter, the group’s 94-year-old president, David Schaecter, stated that he “watched the Oscars with anguish.” “On stage, the maniacal brutality of Hamas was compared to innocent Israelis fighting in self-defense,” Schaecter emphasized.

He addressed Jonathan Glazer directly. “Your comment was factually inconsistent and morally indefensible,” the statement read. “You made a movie about the Holocaust and won an Oscar. And you’re Jewish. Good for you. But it’s shameful that you dare to speak on behalf of six million Jews, including 1.5 million children, who were murdered solely because of their identity.” – the president of The Holocaust Survivors’ Foundation USA reproaches the director.

“You should be ashamed of yourself for using Auschwitz to criticize Israel. If the creation, existence and survival of the state of Israel as a Jewish state is equal to ‘occupation’ in your understanding, then you clearly have learned nothing from your film,” Schaecter concludes. The document was signed by 18 members of the foundation.

According to independent.co.uk, Glazer’s words were also opposed by The Anti-Defamation League, an international Jewish non-governmental organization that specializes in combating anti-Semitism. “Glazer’s comments during the Oscars were factually and morally incorrect. They even further justified the hideous terrorism,” the website quoted the organization as saying.
