For some older people, the need to appear at church for morning mass can be quite a challenge. Similarly to later active participation in this mass. The dietitian warns against doing it on an empty stomach.

The upcoming Easter holidays are a time when many people go to church more often than usual. Among them, of course, there are older people for whom participating in the morning mass can be quite a challenge, but they cannot imagine not being there. “Twice recently I witnessed an old woman faint during morning mass” – says Daria from Legionowo in an interview with eDziecko. “Once they had to call an ambulance and I heard the paramedic sighing that it was another such case and it was all because they didn’t eat breakfast,” she adds.

Marta from Wyszków, in turn, recalls in an interview with eDziecko: “As the daughter of a nurse and a firefighter, I was always left alone at the front for some time in church, because my parents were going to save the fainting grandmothers who went to morning mass without breakfast.” Active participation in mass is quite a challenge for some older people. After sitting on the bench for some time, they suddenly stand up at the right moment, then kneel, stand up again, sit down, and so on several times. Additionally, they pray with their heads bowed. Some people feel bad and need help.

It’s better not to go to church on an empty stomach

Joanna Giza-Gołaszewska, a dietitian from the Smakfit dietary clinic in Warsaw, reminds us that attending morning mass without breakfast is not a good idea, not only for older people. “Apart from the issues of disturbances in the functioning of the circulatory system, feeling unwell due to a sudden change in body position – fainting may result from low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia), which may be caused by missing a meal, e.g. breakfast, in the morning before leaving home and increased exercise.. The blood glucose level is the lowest after the “night break” and the last meal we ate the day before, dinner,” he explains.

The dietitian adds that in some people it may cause a decrease in concentration, weakness, and in some people it may even cause dangerous fainting. “For this reason, morning breakfast is a particularly important meal for them and they should not leave home without it. It doesn’t have to be a big breakfast, a slice of bread with a boiled egg or butter and a tomato may be enough, adds Joanna Giza-Gołaszewska.
