“Is it Holy Communion or a fashion show? My friend’s daughter wanted a wedding dress and now they are shopping like crazy”

Already in May, students of the second grade of primary schools will receive their first Holy Communion. For some families this is a very important moment, so preparations start relatively early. It has long been known that the issue of communion dresses arouses extreme emotions. Ewa writes about it in a letter sent to our editorial office. “

First Communion. second grades are now a fashion show. I remember my first Holy Communion vaguely, but I think it was super organized – all the children had to be dressed the same, no one exalted themselves, no parents held their noses and no one was sorry that they were somehow different. from the group. I know that most parishes now require modest, uniform outfits, but in many places there is still a choice. I might add that I’m approaching forty. I don’t want to sound like a typical boomer who repeats “it was better back in my day…” because it wasn’t, I just want to laugh when I look at this communion circus now.

This whole communion madness has always terrified me and fascinated me at the same time. I understand little girls who would love to put on a Disney princess dress for this occasion, but I don’t understand their mothers – adult women who compete to see whose 8-year-old daughter will have the most wonderful and impressive dress in the world. I don’t have children myself, but several of my closest friends do. Two of them have daughters who are going to their first Holy Communion this year. There’s no need to remind you that it’s only in May, but when we meet for coffee, the litany about “wow, there’s so little time, Kasia has to choose a dress for her communion” immediately begins.

First Holy Communion or a fashion show? “When I heard the price of the dress, I almost fell off my chair”

And it’s a hit because my friend’s daughter wanted a wedding dress. Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but the point is that the dress simply looks like a bride’s. Large, flared, with lots of flowers, decorations, shiny material, and gloves. She will also have a handmade wreath of fresh flowers in an exclusive flower shop. The little one was rummaging through her mother’s phone and chose such a “miracle” herself. Agata (that’s my friend’s name) wasn’t worried or shocked at all, because she wanted to decorate it like that herself.

We were having coffee and she showed me a photo. When I heard the price, I almost fell off my chair. So I’m asking, is this the first Holy Communion or a fashion show? And then they shout over each other: “The point is for the child to have memories!”, “for the photos to be nice, for years to come.” on “what to look at” etc. etc. Well, I don’t believe in that. I know that in their parishes there is no uniform dress code for First Communion, so mothers and daughters can let their imagination run wild.

My other friend is no better either. Her daughter also had very specific requirements, generally speaking, she wants to look “princesslike”. And what? Now they shop around like crazy. I felt the need to write about it because I think that not all parents can afford ball gowns and expensive accessories. How will such a child feel standing around friends dressed like on the front pages of newspapers? It’s definitely not good for children. In my opinion, it should be that everyone assumes the same thing and there is no forgiveness. And besides, if parents want them to receive communion, surely faith should be the most important thing?

Eve.
