Álex González, Maná’s drummer, in his first musical

Recently Maná announced that she will have a residency at the Forum in Los Angeles. By 2023 he will present a new studio album.

Alex Gonzalez, Maná’s drummer, ventured into the musical world with the project led by the Spanish composer Nacho Cano, Malinche, whose first theme, Magic mexico, was unveiled this Friday.

“I had never been in a musical before, my job was to record drums in a recording studio for certain themes that will be played in the play and my idea is that when the play is already presented I can go to Madrid or Mexico to give me a back to play live, “said González.

That possibility of being on stage differently from a concert excites him. “It must be interesting to be playing and see so many people act and dance,” he said.

Álex considers himself a close friend of one of the creators of the Mecano group, and he was in Miami when in 2017 he received a call from Cano to tell him about the project he was working on.

Upon hearing that Cano’s idea was about a musical based on the supposed love story that the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés had lived with the Aztec translator Malintzin-known as La Malinche-, González gave him some advice to carry it out .

“I told him that I had no doubts about the musical question, but that it was important for him to soak up the subject with historians and the people of Mexico, that since it is a history of miscegenation and he being Spanish, there would be no conflict,” says González.

A year later Cano would contact him to invite him to recordings of the music of the Malinche that would take place in New York and González accepted.

Magic mexico is just one of the many songs and instrumental themes in which Álex participated and currently you can see a little of the work they carried out together in the documentary that is on Netflix under the name Making Malinche by Nacho Cano.

“With Nacho I laugh and have a lot of fun, many things were recorded on audio and video and I feel very honored to be part of it,” confesses González.

While all this unfolds, Álex continues to be part of one of the most influential rock groups in Spanish, which is currently celebrating 35 years of career.

Recently, Maná announced that they will have a residency at the Forum in Los Angeles, where they plan to play “until people get tired” of them.

“With Maná things are amazing, as most of the bands have been getting up to speed on how the coronavirus issue is going, next year we have a residence in Los Angeles and it is the only place where we are going to be playing. in the United States ”, explains González.

But Mexico will be the second country to have the visit of the band from Guadalajara, Jalisco, while the rest of the world will have to wait for Maná’s arrival until 2023 with a “huge tour” that they are planning.

In addition, they continue to work on the collaborations of their great successes of which songs have already been heard together with Joy and Alejandro Fernández, which he hopes 2022 will be the year in which they finish presenting this album.

“By 2023, there is also talk that there will be a studio album, the last one was Bed on fire, in 2015, and fans They ask us for it, and we really want to release new music ”, he concludes. (AND)
