Helen Mirren went on stage to receive the award and tore up the paper with her speech. Not without reason

The last American Cinematheque Award ceremony received wide attention around the world. All because of the symbolic gesture chosen by Helen Mirren. The 78-year-old actress was awarded a special award this year, and she decided to use her performance on stage to raise awareness of an issue that has been troubling the film community for some time.

This year’s American Cinematheque Award gala took place on February 15, 2024. During the event, the jury each year selects an artist to whom they present a special award for an above-average contribution to the art of film and the entertainment industry. For 2023, they decided to honor British actress Helen Mirren.

She was honored with a special lifetime achievement statuette. She used her “five minutes” for an important purpose

During a career spanning almost 60 years, the 78-year-old was nominated for an Oscar four times, for such productions as: “The Madness of King George”, “Gosford Park”, “The Last Station and “The Queen”. However, all this time Helen Mirren gave in also known as a person who really cares about improving the situation in the film and entertainment industry.

Therefore, during the last gala, when the moment came to receive the award, she decided to take advantage of the moment when the whole world would be watching her. The British woman came on stage with a piece of paper from which she read a speech that read as follows:

Ladies and Gentlemen, Distinguished Guests, Dear Friends, I am extremely honored to stand before you today and accept this extraordinary award. To be recognized for a lifetime devoted to the craft of acting is an indescribable privilege. First of all, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the industry and people who have supported me throughout this incredible journey. It was a life full of passion, challenges and, above all, an unyielding love for the art of storytelling, she said.

Then she added: “And it was written by artificial intelligence” and then ostentatiously tore up the piece of paper. Helen Mirren thus expressed her opposition to the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. This is also one of the demands of the American actors’ association SAG-AFTRA, which believes that artificial intelligence poses a real threat to the future of the acting profession. The British woman’s gesture was appreciated by the audience’s euphoric ovation.
