On April 12, “Perfect Days”, the Japanese candidate for the Oscar, will hit Polish cinemas. The production was created in cooperation with German director Wim Wenders. The creator has already produced titles such as “Lisbon Story” and “Heaven over Berlin”.
“Perfect Days”: The Japanese-German production will fight for the Oscar
“Perfect Days” is a story about simplicity and the beauty hidden in everyday activities. The main character of the film is Hirayama (Kōji Yakusho), who is shy but in love with the world around him. On a daily basis, the man cleans public toilets, and treats his seemingly ordinary job as a special ritual.
Although creators from two different parts of the world collaborated on the film, “Perfect Days” is considered a typically Japanese production. The cast included only Japanese people, and the co-author of the script was Takuma Takasaki.
This year, the following films will compete for the Oscar in the best international film category: “The Brotherhood of the Snow”, “I, the Captain”, “The Teacher’s Lounge”, “Business Zone” and “Perfect Days”. The awards gala is scheduled for March 10, 2024. So far, Japan has already won five Oscars, including for the film “Drive my car” in 2021. Previously, the Land of the Rising Sun won Oscars for “The Farewell” in 2008, “Samurai” in 1955, “Hell’s Gate” in 1954 and “Rashōmon” in 1951. For Wim Wenders himself, this is his fourth Oscar nomination. He previously competed for this award in 2014, 2011 and 1999, but to no avail.
