This year’s Valentine’s Day did not escape vigilant attention, and several titles perfect for watching together have already appeared in the platform’s library. One of them is the British melodrama “One Day”, which premiered on February 8, 2024 and instantly stole the hearts of viewers.
“One Day” – Nicholls’ book was adapted into a TV series. What is the story about?
This is a mini series based on the author of the same title by David Nicholls. Its main characters are Emma and Dexter, graduates of the University of Edinburgh. After the graduation ceremony, they decide to spend the night together. When dawn breaks, their paths diverge, but, as it later turns out, not for long. From then on, they would meet again at the same time every year for the next two decades. Others, with new experiences, successes and disappointments, but still connected by the inseparable feeling that arose between them on that memorable evening.
The production consists of 14 episodes, each of which lasts less than 30 minutes. The main characters were created on the screen by Ambika Mod, known from the series “It’s Going to Hurt”, and Leo Woodall, who owes his popularity to the 2nd season of “The White Lotus”. Other roles were played by, among others: Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny, Toby Stephens and Joely Richardson. Nicole Taylor is directing, with Molly Manners, Luke Snellin, John Hardwick and Kate Hewitt taking over the camera.
The new Netflix series has become a hit. Reviewers rave about “One Day”
It is worth mentioning that “One Day” became a hit literally in one day. The series created a sensation not only among viewers, but also among critics, taking a place at the top of the TOP10 list of the most popular series in Poland. According to the website, Internet users are delighted with the gripping plot and the tear-jerking story.
I will never come to terms with this
I have never cried so much at a screening in my life. I love every minute
This adaptation is so good that I already feel sick
– are some of the viewers’ opinions. What’s more, the abbreviation “emmadex”, which is a combination of the names of the main characters, has even started to appear on the Internet. Critics also have a similar opinion. According to the portal, Chitra Ramaswamy from “The Guardian” stated that it is “a flawless romantic comedy that you can’t help but fall in love with”, especially due to the nostalgic elements and sublime soundtrack. This position was also supported by Neil Armstrong from the BBC, who stated that although it is a romcom, it “contains a serious, deep message”.
Fans of Nicholls’ work will certainly remember that this is not the first adaptation of this novel. It turns out that already in 2011, Lone Scherfig brought this story to the big screens, but even the star cast, including Jim Sturgess in the main roles, did not attract crowds to cinemas and ultimately the production was not met with particular delight.
