Robert Downey Jr. for his role in “Oppenheimer”. has a chance to win an Oscar for best supporting actor. Now he revealed that he had already auditioned for a role in another hit Christopher Nolan film almost 20 years earlier. At that time, however, the director was not interested in him and rejected his candidacy in advance.

Robert Downey Jr. is undoubtedly one of the most popular American actors in the world. He owes his recognition largely to the role of Tony Stark, i.e. Iron Man, in hit productions. Now it turned out that less than two decades earlier he could have played another famous comic book character, because he was trying to get involved in a film from a competing studio. However, his ambitious plan was buried by Christopher Nolan himself. Why?

“Oppenheimer” with 13 Oscar nominations. The favorites include: Robert Downey Jr.

A few days ago, the screenings of films that have a chance to compete for the American Film Academy statuette this year began. The American Cinematheque discussion panel, which is organized after the screenings, featured, among others: the entire team of Christopher Nolan, who received as many as 13 nominations. One of the guests was Robert Downey Jr., who is a strong candidate for an Oscar in the “Best Supporting Actor” category for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss. Similarly to the director and the actor in the title role, Cillian Murphy, who also seem unrivaled in their categories. During the talks, they talked about, among others: about the behind-the-scenes work on the set and what their cooperation was like. That’s when Downey Jr. surprised everyone with the information that it was not their first professional meeting.

Robert Downey Jr. he wanted to play Batman’s opponent. Nolan cast a different actor in the role

It turns out that the three of them met years ago during castings for the first part of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, the hit film “Batman Begins”. Robert Downey Jr. he was determined to get the job and stubbornly dreamed of landing the role of Scarecrow. – I heard that there was a role, Scarecrow, and I said: “I am Scarecrow” – the actor and immediately decided to contact . – We met for tea and I didn’t think he was particularly bothered by our conversation. He was polite and all that, but you know, you get that feeling when someone definitely won’t choose you, he said.

As it later turned out, his premonitions were not wrong at all. Nolan chose him for this role and cast him in it, even though the actor participated in the casting for Bruce Wayne. In turn, Batman was ultimately played by Christian Bale and today, despite our sincere sympathy for Downey Jr., it is difficult to imagine that the show would have a different cast. There is no doubt, however, that Nolan appreciates his skills and extensive experience, as he himself said in an interview for the LA Times. – He’s one of our great actors. Even though a generation of kids know what a big movie star he is, they didn’t see his subtlety and brilliance. (…) The directors are well aware of Downey’s talent. However, because his incredible energy can shine through the screen, finding the right role for him is difficult – straight up.
