Keep your dog at home? Cry if he doesn’t come back? “The city people treat them better than children”

It is no secret that animals in the countryside are often treated completely differently than in cities. According to many people, these are two extremes. However, we can hear the opinion that this has been slowly starting to change in recent years.

A few months ago, there was a lot of news in the media about a couple who refused to participate in the wedding. All because the future newlyweds did not invite their pet to the ceremony. – I know that their dog is like a child and I don’t want to be cruel or insensitive, but I’m also tired of hearing them compare my daughter to a dog – said the bride, quoted by the portal.

Recently, the story was recalled on several Polish websites. As you can easily guess, it aroused a lot of emotions. When I read it, I thought that it was perfect grist for people who claim that we, young people with these animals, “have already lost our minds.”

“Who saw this to cry for a dog?!”

This topic often comes up in my conversations with family members who live in the countryside. For many of them, it is shocking that we treat our pets as family members and that we experience their illnesses and deaths.

However, I must point out that, in my opinion, it is very often a generational issue. My cousins, who belong to the Z and Alpha generations, have a completely different approach to animals. They argue with their parents about allowing dogs at home and are outraged when dogs are kept on chains. In my opinion, social media has a big influence on this. These cousins have access to the same content as their peers from larger cities. They observe every day how animals can be treated. And since they are both dog lovers, they would also like better conditions for their pets.

A perfect example of these differences is the situation from a few months ago. When one of them’s dog went missing after a walk, she was in a very bad mood and started crying. Her dad couldn’t stand it and said:

Who saw this to cry for a dog?!

However, it is not the case that older people do not change their approach. My 86-year-old grandmother has lived in the countryside all her life. When she was young, animals weren’t treated like family members. However, when her 20-year-old cat Murmurka passed away some time ago, she cried for a long time. – I used to laugh when I heard on TV that people were crying over their dogs or cats. And now I do it myself, she admitted in a conversation with me.

She was surprised by the locals’ comments

Recently, a video from TikTok also made me reflect on this topic. Its author moved to the countryside with her husband and dogs. In her new place, she was surprised by the comments of the locals. In the recording, she shared the opinions she heard. These types of beliefs are, of course, a huge contrast to how dogs are treated in larger towns.

“A dog is not a child to be taken care of”, “Keep a dog at home?”, “A dog should be kept on a chain”, “There was a time when dogs didn’t go to the vet and it was fine”, “Should you bathe a dog? Well, I’m not crazy yet” “The dog will lick itself.”

They stared as if a giraffe was walking through the village

The topic discussed in the film sparked a heated discussion. Many people agreed with the author of the recording and shared various experiences. “I once heard from my grandfather that there was no point in spending money on a dog’s surgery. That was the only time I swore at him,” “When I was a teenager and I was taking my ONCE for walks at my family home, people would stare at us as if a giraffe was walking through the village”, “How do I know this, while the neighbors’ cane corso was howling day and night on a short chain without access to water or food” – we can read in the comments section under the video.

However, there were also opposing voices. As some commentators write, the situation has already improved in many places. “Somehow in my countryside no one talks like that. Lots of people go for walks with their dogs”, “I guess I’m lucky because I live in the countryside and I’ve never heard such texts” – we read under the post.
