A bronze bust of more than 50 kilos of Miguel de Cervantes has disappeared in the coastal town of Zahara de los Atunes, in Cadiz. A sculpture that was inaugurated on September 18, 2023 and that today, four months later, has appeared deserted.

The authorities fear that it was precisely the bronze that has attracted thieves, but The City Council has already reported the theft to the Civil Guard and the neighbors feel sorry for what happened but they are not surprised by it either.

“I wasn’t surprised that they took the bust, I said before putting it up that they would take it, that this wouldn’t last long because there is no security here,” one of the neighbors explained before the laSexta microphones.

And it is precisely the neighbors who point out the lack of security who say they live here during the rest of the year: “Security, none here. There is no police or anything,” denounces another of the neighbors.

In this case and according to the mayor of Zahara de los Atunes, Agustín Conejo, he believes that the robbery was somewhat premeditated because “it was at 4 in the morning.” The investigation will clarify what happened and the mystery that, for now, only the empty pedestal left by the writer’s statue knows.
