Many people find them very easy to grow. They don’t have many requirements, you can sometimes forget about watering or go on holiday, and they will still survive. The problem may arise when you decide that it is time to repot the plant. Even if you wear gloves, there is a high chance that you will get cut. Fortunately, there is a way to avoid this.

It is worth knowing that cacti do not like repotting. If you are going to do this, it is worth providing conditions that will make frequent action in the future no longer necessary. When to repot a cactus? First of all, when you notice that the pot is too small or there are pests in the ground. It is also worth replanting newly purchased specimens, as they often grow in tight pots. Apart from these exceptions, the rule is simple – we replant a young cactus no more often than every two years, and older ones every five years or so.

You can repot cacti when they are not blooming. The best time is the turn of January and the beginning of February, so it’s worth starting now. Don’t wait until March when flowering begins. A week before transplanting the plant, stop watering it and do not do anything with your bare hands.

You don’t need any specialized equipment to safely replant a cactus. All you need is an old newspaper. Simply fold it into a narrow strip to wrap around the plant, then turn the pot upside down and gently remove it. Trim the old, damaged and infected roots with pruners, pour expanded clay and fresh substrate into the new pot, and finally add the cactus and sprinkle it with cactus substrate. Remember that the root ball should be completely covered. After this, there will come a time when you will be able to move the newspaper away from the plant. Water the plant only about 1 week after transplanting.
