The spokesperson and deputy for Euskera, Culture and Sports of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, Leixuri Arrizabalagaassured this Tuesday that the project to expand the Guggenheim Museum to Urdaibai is “a good opportunity and not a threat” for the Busturialdea region. “I think it is necessary to bring a project like this to Busturialdea, and, although we are in a situation of uncertainty, the investment must continue because it is a firm bet“he remarked.
In an interview with Bizkaia Irratia, Arrizabalaga stated that the two-year period that the Guggenheim Board of Trustees has given itself to “analyze the viability” of the project “is not news that has appeared suddenly”, but rather it is a decision that “had already been taken” in the previous meeting of the board of trustees and that is “within the calendar forecasts” of the project.
The spokesperson for the regional institution explained that, to carry out the project, it is necessary “some previous tasks” such as the modification of urban plans, decontamination work or a participatory process.
“Without doing all of this, the project cannot be completed, and that is why the two-year period. This work must be done in time, and when it materializes, the project can be completed and it will be explained well and concretely to all citizens of Bizkaia what it consists of”, he explained.
Arrizabalaga has indicated that the idea is to maintain the project of two buildings in Murueta and Gernika united by one five kilometer greenwaybut he has insisted that, “in order to get there, we must first do some tasks, such as decontaminating land, demolishing some buildings and adapting others or materializing agreements with the Ministry of Ecological Transition.”
Likewise, the spokesperson for the Bizkaia Provincial Council has assured that “The inhabitants of Busturialdea will be heard” and that the project will be explained to them, since, as he has acknowledged, “until now it has not been explained well or explicitly, because there has been a lack of information, since all these tasks were undone.”
