Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia was a guest of the Onet and Newsweek podcast “Rachunek conscience”. The politician revealed, among other things, his attitude towards teaching religion at school. As he recalled, such lessons used to be organized in rooms next to the church. According to Hołownia, this solution was very beneficial.
– I am a supporter of the fact that religion classes should be held at the parish, because they also build the community. It is not that a priest becomes a state official who leaves the parish, instead of gathering people around it, accustoming them to this place, to this community. […]. A person should decide for himself whether to follow this religion. Religion should be placed in the schedule of hours so that you can attend it or not, without damaging your schedule, Hołownia said.
“I feel like there were more kids going then than now.”
The vast majority of people who took part in the discussion under our Facebook post support the idea mentioned by Hołownia. Many of them participated in activities that took place outside of school. “Learning religion in catechetical rooms at the rectory makes more sense than learning in a mass school”, “Yes, immediately! The place of religion is in the Church!”, “Yes, in my time there was religion in a room next to the Church and we went there. I have the impression that more kids attended than now”, “Religion at the church was a pleasure for us, and now the teacher at school implements the core curriculum”, “Yes, in my time, people went to religion classes at the rectory. It was not forced and the kids went in whole classes. There was no compulsion “is good, many kids give up on it and stay in the common room,” we can read under our Facebook post.
“Let’s hope it’s not too late”
However, not everyone wants to give up teaching religion in schools. “You will want this religion again someday. Hopefully it won’t be too late”, “The fact that it doesn’t bother me at school, I just don’t understand why the grade is on the school report card”, “I think it’s not, but it should be as an additional subject for those interested after classes,” write the discussion participants.
One of the women also pointed out that the new solution may make the lives of many parents difficult. Therefore, in her opinion, religion classes should remain in schools. – Not every parent has the opportunity to take their child specifically to subsequent classes – she wrote.
