Filmmaker Mar Coll has begun filming her new film, Mothers don’twhich marks his return to the cinema after ten years, according to the production company Elastica Films (O Horn, Matria, Alcarras…).

Produced by Escándalo Films and Elastica Films, Mothers don’t is inspired by the novel Amek ez dute by Katixa Agirre, which “addresses the tension and complexity of a fragile motherhood, approaching an indisputable reality, from empathy and understanding.”

Mar Coll, who directed Three dies with the family and All the best will do for heras well as series like Kill the father and This is not Swedenconsiders that “motherhood has been so underrepresented and so partial in an often syrupy light, that any dissonant experience has been buried by taboo.”

Co-written with Valentina Viso, the film, which is shot in Catalan, is articulated “as an intimate drama, with lights of mystery, bordering at times on the thriller psychological”.

The story stars María, a young 34-year-old writer who has just become a mother and who is obsessed with a scandalous event: Alice Espanet has drowned her 10-month-old twins in the bathtub, and writing about Alice will be María’s only way to to be able to understand the radical experience of her own motherhood.

The film stars newcomer Laura Weissmahr alongside Oriol Pla (Creature, wild sunflowers, Incerta Glòria), who are accompanied in the cast by Giannina Fruttero and Belén Cruz.

The filming of ‘The Mothers No’ will take place over seven weeks in various locations in Barcelona, Vall de Boí -in the Lleida Pyrenees- and Tarragona.
