The film recreates the 72 days of tragedy that occurred after Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972, an accident that left only 16 survivors.

Recently, this cinematographic work by Juan Antonio Bayona was added to the Netflix catalog and experienced success, which is why the streaming platform planned a meeting between Canessa and the person who represents him on the screen.

When the events took place, 51 years ago, Roberto was just a 19-year-old medical student and headed to a rugby match with his Old Christian’s Club teammates. He and Fernando Parrado were tasked with walking through the Andes for 10 days to seek help, as reported by Universidad Claeh.

When meeting Matías Recalta, the survivor recalled some of the thoughts he had during his journey through the Valley of Tears. “In the Andes I said, ‘If I have to die, I will die, I can’t live with this terror,'” Canessa said.
