In both Catholicism and Orthodoxy, sacramentals are things that have a character, serve to sanctify everyday life and are treated in a specific way. One of the sacramentals is holy water, which the priest uses to bless the house, apartment and household members during Christmas carols. What can be done with it after the priest’s visit?
What is holy water used for? Who can consecrate it?
The history of holy water dates back to the 2nd century after the birth of Christ. People believed in the health-promoting power of such water, and it is mentioned in the Old Testament. Water is blessed by blessing it, e.g. by a priest or bishop, and as a result of this process it is excluded from traditional use. Water is used during baptism, as well as for blessing houses, food and even vehicles. Most often, however, it is useful during a pastoral visit, but many people do not know what to do with holy water after the visit.
How to use holy water after a priest’s visit? Don’t pour it down the sink
Out of respect for religion, holy water cannot be poured down the sink or toilet. You can use it during life events, e.g. to dedicate a new apartment or give it to someone who is changing their place. However, if nothing special is happening in your life, it is better to pour water into the plants, and it will be a symbol of support for the living organism. You can also pour it in a dignified place, e.g. at the grave of a loved one. We can also use it during daily prayer and dip our hands in it before making the sign of the cross.
