“My partner and I earn PLN 10,000, we live in Warsaw. It’s hard for us to make ends meet”

“My husband and I don’t live in luxury. We don’t have children, we rent a two-room apartment on the outskirts of Warsaw and we both, at least we thought, earn decently. Unfortunately, lately we’ve barely been able to make ends meet,” writes Ola in letters to the editor.

I feel like we’ve been taken advantage of at every turn lately. Prices in Warsaw are crazy. My husband and I do not live in luxury. We don’t have children, we rent a two-room apartment on the outskirts and we both, at least we thought, earn decently. Unfortunately, we’ve been struggling to make ends meet lately.

Cost of living in Warsaw. “PLN 300 for a haircut”

Every month we have a total of 10 thousand. PLN for expenses. After paying for the apartment (4,000 for rent) and other bills, we have less than half left to live on. Theoretically, it should be enough, but in the capital, already in the middle of the month we have nothing to put in the pot.

We try to minimize costs. We usually cook at home, we don’t eat out, we buy second-hand things. We gave up on romantic dates in restaurants a long time ago, but sometimes we would like to go out for dinner with colleagues from work. Such an evening costs at least PLN 200.

If you want to take care of yourself, you have to be your own hairdresser and beautician. For a haircut in the capital you have to pay PLN 300 for women and PLN 100 for men. For a hybrid – PLN 140. If you get sick and need an urgent medical consultation, appointments are available only with private doctors. A visit from PLN 200 and up. Food prices? Each trip to the store costs PLN 200-300.

Prices are rising and salaries are stagnant

At every step you hear about price increases. Everything is getting more expensive and salaries are stagnant. We both work in corporations and last year our bosses told us that there was and would be no chance of a raise. Why? Cost cutting. So how do we sustain ourselves? How to think about starting a family? How to save for an apartment? I dream of stability, but as a person born in the late 1980s, my dreams end there.

Ola.
