He Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 He went down in history after a fatal accident Friday October 13, 1972when the plane carrying a group of Uruguayan 20-somethings to a rugby match in Santiago, Chile, fell into the middle of the snow-covered Andes Mountains.

Of the 45 passengers who boarded the Fairchild FH-227D32 survived the collapse, but four died the first night after the accident. The survivors would not be rescued until 72 days later, on December 22, 1972.. Than only 16 passengers survivedas the rest had succumbed to a snow avalanche, untreated diseases and the extreme cold of the mountain range.

The dramatic story of survival and rescue was made into a film by Juan Antonio Garcia Bayona of The Snow Associationa film released in 2023 and available in Netflix from January 4, 2024.

Juan Antonio Bayona obtained the rights to the book The Snow Associationby Pablo Vierci (2008), to direct the film. It has been described as the definitive book on Andean survivors, with everyone stepping in to tell their experiences.

However, this isn’t the first time this story of tragedy and triumph has been published in a book or brought to the big screen. Several survivors have immortalized their own version of the accident in books, as well as in podcasts and documentaries.
