“Beata z Albatrosa” or “Żółty autumn leaf” are just two hits from his extensive discography that brought him incredible popularity and sympathy from listeners. Although he captivated crowds in the 1960s, he did not manage to make a dizzying career, and his songs brought the greatest popularity to the artists who covered him. This was also the case with the iconic “Colorful Fairs”, for which she received all the credit. How did this happen?
“Colorful fairs” delighted the audience. The jurors left no stone unturned in Laskowski’s case
In his heyday, Laskowski had as many supporters as opponents, especially among critics and colleagues. This group included, among others, Ryszard Ulicki, who harshly assessed his debut album in the Koszalin press. Everything changed when, at the beginning of January 1977, he heard him perform in Koszalin. Tormented by remorse, he finally found an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. It was all due to a chance meeting during a visit to the radio, during which he handed the musician the unfinished text of “Colorful Fairs”. It was this piece that made Laskowski qualify for the competition during the festival in Opole.
Although many were eagerly awaiting his performance, the reactions were completely different from those expected. Although the audience and TV viewers were delighted, the jurors were quite the opposite. Especially Andrzej Wróblewski, who, when giving the verdict, stood up and ostentatiously showed the zero points board to the audience and the camera.
The television showed how, to the accompaniment of the audience’s whistles, and against the background of the performer’s confused face, subsequent jurors awarded ‘Jarmarkki’ the lowest possible marks, lower than the worst marks awarded to any other song at the festival
– recalled Piotr Bratkowski. Although the viewers were delighted, he was presented with the Journalists’ and Audience Awards, the disgust remained and soon reached its peak.
Rodowicz sang “Colorful Fairs” on the Sopot stage. It created a sensation that Laskowski had never even dreamed of
One of the people who saw potential in this song was . Right after the event, she started talking to the creators of “Fairs”, which she intended to perform at the festival in Sopot. She received consent without any major difficulties, but no one expected such a show. On stage, she presented the entire range of attributes mentioned in the text: from pigeons in a cage, to clowns, drums and feathers. To say it was a hit is to say nothing. She later performed the song many times, including: in the former Soviet Union, and also recorded many albums that sold millions of copies.
Many people still believe that all the success was wrongly attributed to her, because the original performer of the hit still has no credit for it. However, he can still count on the admiration of listeners for whom his version is timeless. – I think that Maryla sang it very beautifully, but she turned it into too much of a show about nothing. Because when Laskowski sings, sometimes I play it on YouTube, “what I count, I count, but I always say that I miss it the most”, it makes me want to cry – said the actor, Andrzej Grabowski, in .
