is a journalist (publishes, among others, in Krytyka Polityczna, Onet, Wirtualna Polska, Glamour) and an analyst of the Demagog.pl portal. She is also the author of a very important book titled “The Priest’s Daughter”. Why important? Because it is her personal confession about what the childhood of the daughter of a priest was like, who from the very beginning considered her appearance in the world to be a “sin”.
The journalist decided to tell her story publicly. Among other things, because – as she emphasized in interviews – the anonymous stories of clergy’s children (usually abandoned by their fathers, forced to constantly guard the secret of their origins, which is an exceptional psychological burden) – although still very important! – they do not have as much impact as a story from the perspective of a person with his name and surname revealed.
To say that the author’s memoirs are moving is simply an understatement. The book gives the lie to the commonly cherished stereotype of Catholic morality and, consequently, to the alleged “innocence” of clergy who succumb to an unspecified “temptation.” This scandalous argument is often raised by their defenders, including those from the Church.
Recently, weekend.gazeta.pl published an interview with Marta Glanc, conducted by Mike Urbaniak. The author returned to her earliest memories. “My therapist said that people will feel attacked by my story because it disturbs a certain image they have in their heads,” she told our journalist.
She became pregnant by a priest. He told her to have an abortion
In her texts, the journalist still raises the issue of the treatment of children of clergy by society and the Church authorities, but not only that. He also points out that the people most often blamed by church circles in such situations are women. . The heroine of the reportage lost her parents when she was still a very small child. She and her sister sought solace, understanding and a sense of belonging in the Church.
Marta Glanc’s interlocutor was a very religious person. One day, a new, young priest appeared in her parish. The man began to clearly seduce the teenager: he invited her on dates and outlined visions of a future together, having a family and children. – It was strange and surprising to me. After all, I was just a child back then, she confided to the journalist. The man took advantage of the fact that the lonely girl was looking for closeness and support. He lured her with promises of love. – I felt safe and confident with him. In addition, he kept repeating that it was possible that he would not be able to cope with the role of a priest – we read in WP.
The priest’s relationship with the underage girl lasted three years. When Weronika was 18, he invited her on a trip together, where they had intercourse. Immediately after his return, he drastically broke off contact with her. – It took some time before I realized that he was only interested in sex. Despite everything, I loved him and suffered. Then I was sure I was pregnant with him, she confessed.
He called and said that there was no way such a thing could happen, after all, he was a priest! He called again in a few days. He announced that he had made an appointment for me with a gynecologist. When I asked why, I heard: “You’ll find out when you get there.” A trembling Weronika told her sister about everything. She asked: ‘Did he just offer me an abortion?’
So the girl decided to cheat on him. She pretended to undergo the procedure, but gave birth to a daughter.
She gave birth to a priest’s child. “Almost everyone was on his side”
Later, when her daughter was born, the news naturally reached her biological father. Marta Glanc’s interlocutor had to endure persistent attacks from him. She fell victim to ostracism in her hometown. “(…) What others did terrified me. Almost everyone was on the priest’s side,” she confessed in a conversation with the journalist.
For the first 9 years of his daughter’s life, the priest showed no initiative and did not want to have any contact with the child. Later, he began to make attempts to contact him, also through other people. These were very traumatic experiences for the little girl.
Finally, after one such event, her mother told her the truth. Mrs. Weronika’s daughter, who is now an adult, does not want to have contact with her biological parent, who never even aspired to be a father. Today, he and his mother live abroad – we learn from the reportage.
