The information the newcomer has may help Toranaga in his fight for power. The fate of Toranaga and Blackthorne is inextricably linked with their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) – a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last representative of a disgraced family. Serving her master during this tense political period, Mariko must reconcile her cooperation with Blackthorne with her faith, to which she owes her life, and her obligations to her deceased father.

The 10-episode adaptation of James Clavell’s best-selling novel was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who also served as showrunner and executive producer. The novel was filmed for the first time in 1980. The series starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune. The series won three Golden Globes and became a huge hit.
