Christmas is fast approaching. One of the traditions associated with the Christmas Eve table is carp. Unfortunately, some people still decide to buy live fish, which is something that animal activists and ecologists regularly warn against. Virtually all of us remember this terrible sight from supermarket halls, where just before Christmas, swimming pools filled with tightly packed, still-living carps appear. Often, these fish are kept in inappropriate conditions and in an unethical manner.
– We often observe fish being kept in an inappropriate amount of water. For many years, a problem was that customers carried carp home in plastic bags. Fortunately, two years ago the chief veterinarian issued guidelines according to which fish should be transported in containers with water – emphasized Cezary Wyszyński from the Viva Foundation in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita”.
Christmas 2023. How much will we pay for carp?
We recently wrote that this year’s holidays may be the last one during which it will be possible to buy live carp. Politicians are also fighting for a ban on the sale of live fish. Katarzyna Piekarska, a representative of the Civic Coalition and a member of the Parliamentary Group of Friends of Animals, pointed out that the world is “evolving” in this respect.
– Analyzing the results of public opinion polls, it seems that now is the right time to introduce a ban on the sale of live carp – she told “Rzeczpospolita” journalists. She then announced that, together with a group of MPs, they would submit a bill providing for the sale of live fish only in the case of fry and aquarium fish specimens.
“It will be correspondingly more expensive”
Despite numerous appeals from ecologists and politicians, many people will certainly buy carp before Christmas. What are this year’s forecasts for fish prices? According to RMF FM, they should not be higher than a year ago. However, the catch of the species will be delayed – breeders point to high temperature as the reason for this state of affairs.
As Ziemowit Pirtań from the Association of Salmonid Fish Producers said in an interview with RMF FM, a kilogram of live carp may cost about PLN 20-25 this year.
A fillet or slice will be correspondingly more expensive. In addition to carp, Poles eagerly buy herring and trout. Salmon trout costs about PLN 4 per 100 grams. This is half the price of salmon
