The first reviews of the new “Hunger Games” are already in: Predictable, dispassionate and derivative
Among the negative opinions of reviewers, the accusation that the film is predictable and too long is repeated. “Mediocre, it has one advantage – there are currently no plans for another part,” writes Alex Bentley from Culture Map. “We are tired of the extended duration in which we are served excessive complications of simple assumptions,” adds Leigh Paatsch of the New York Post. In turn, Meredith G. White from Arizona Repubic points out that the film tries to be as good as its predecessors, which has a negative impact on reception.
Joey Morona of the Cleveland Plain Dealer was tempted to judge the film as a metaphor. “Like The Hunger Games themselves, the film is not entertainment, but an attempt at survival,” he summed up the production. Liz Braun from the Toronto Sun notes that there are some interesting action scenes on screen, but the film is “definitely too long.” “Predictable, dispassionate and derivative, but at least it doesn’t detract from the overall picture,” said Travis Hopson of Examiner.com.
However, on Rotten Tomatoes we can also find a lot of positive words about the new part of “The Hunger Games”. “Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler are phenomenal, each of them creates great personalities, arousing both sympathy and anger. They combine their complexity of characters with extraordinary charisma,” writes Chris Joyce from the Movies and Munchies channel on YouTube. Robert Kojder of the Chicago Film Critics Association notes that the film is a bit “edgier” than previous titles in the series and “no longer resembles a youth story.” “Brilliant, crazy, cruel,” sums up Den of Geek’s David Crow.
