The final twenty of the Youth Word of the Year 2023 plebiscite have been announced. The distinguished group includes, among others, “delulu”, “zgerypa³a”, “side-eye”, “sigma” and “bambik”.

The Youth Word of the Year competition is an annual plebiscite organized by the PWN Scientific Publishing House in cooperation with the University of Warsaw. During the competition, the jury selects 20 words submitted by Internet users that have entered the language of young generations. The exact composition of the jury this year is: prof. Ph.D. Anna Wileczek, prof. Ph.D. Marek Łaziński, prof. Ph.D. Ewa Kołodziejek, Bartek Chaciński and representatives of PWN. Teenagers from the UJK Youth Language and Culture Observatory act as advisors.

Last year, it was at the top of the ranking according to Internet users the word “essa”. It means a state full of positive things, especially joy. However, it turned out to be the winner of the jury award in 2022 the word “peeling off”, denoting a state or person detached from reality. The voting to select the winner will last until November 30. We will know the results in December. What does the final twenty look like? It was selected from among the proposals submitted by Internet users and which also met the regulatory criteria. There were almost 18 thousand of them. These are the following words and expressions: bambik, baza, bratku, cringe, delulu, drillowiec, fr/FR, git, imo, kys, LOL, NPC, odklejka, oporowo, rel, rizz, side-eye, sigma, slay, zgerypała .

The word “bambik” became famous when Donald Tusk described Mateusz Morawiecki this way during the election campaign. It means a rookie, inexperienced and beginner or worse player, player. In turn, the final word “cringe” means something embarrassing and causing shame or disgust. A word that was also in the final 20 is “gerypala”, which is a quote from one of the characters of the para-documentary series “School”.
