They wanted to be original. They chose a name for their daughter that terrified the officials

Officials from Suwałki recently asked for the opinion of experts from the Polish Language Council. Their doubts were raised by the name that certain parents decided to give their daughter. What response did they receive?

Choosing a name for a child is not an easy task, according to many parents. Often they don’t want it to be too common. In such cases, parents sometimes choose extremely original options.

They chose a name that may cause anxiety

Last December, some parents from Suwałki decided to name their daughter Malicja. Initially, officials did not know whether they could consent to this. Their doubts were raised primarily by the fact that the chosen name might be associated with the “militia”. For this reason, they asked for the opinion of experts from the Polish Language Council.

However, it turns out that experts have no contraindications in this case. – Malicja, as a proposed female name, does not show any clear departures from other, formally similar, but traditionally sanctioned names. For example, in Polish we have an almost identical-sounding name “Alicja”, which in this case can be treated as a model variation. When can an official refuse to consent to giving a name?

It is also worth mentioning cases where officials may not agree to giving a name. According to the rules in force in Poland, it should be written according to the rules of modern Polish. Therefore, names that do not meet this requirement are unlikely to be accepted. Moreover, the name should not arouse negative associations, be offensive or ridiculing. In such cases, when officials have doubts, they usually contact experts from the Polish Language Council.
