Hanka Bielicka, or rather Anna Weronika Bielicka, was born in 1915 in Kononowce, in today’s Ukraine. She was a theater, television and cabaret actress, and also a Romance teacher by profession. She is remembered by viewers for wearing impressive hats, her characteristic hoarseness, and her original sense of humor, which brought a smile to many faces.
She hid behind a stage image. Privately, fate did not spare her love dramas
Despite many admirers who sought her favor, the actress was never lucky in love. However, at the beginning of his career, she got married in 1940 and she said the sacramental “yes” to Jerzy Duszyński. When Bielecka got the job in Vilnius, she moved in with three other actors. These were Danuta Szaflarska, Irena Brzezińska and Jerzy Duszyński. It was when Danuta Szaflarska moved into a room with Irena Brzezińska, and Bielicka was given a room with Duszyński, that the actress was said to have said: “With a man in a room, and in the same bed? No way without getting married.” According to some sources, before leaving for Vilnius, Duszyński told Hanna that he wanted her to become his wife. The actress supposedly realized that she was in love with him after some time. Years later, however, she mentioned in interviews that actor, they were connected only by friendship, and the decision to get married was dictated by their need for closeness. Hanka Bielicka wrote in her biography:
Maybe that’s why we got married. I think he cheated on me on the third day after the wedding. When he drank, he went to women, I knew that.
Their marriage ended after 12 years together. They separated, remaining friends and living in the same tenement house. Her next love affair was with Jerzy Baranowski, with whom she collaborated on the legendary “Afternoon Tea at the Microphone”. They had a fiery romance, but the actor was married. When the man decided to divorce after some time, it turned out that he did not do it to get involved with Bielicka. It’s hard for the actress to part with her beloved. She wanted to take her own life, when she found out that he had left his wife for a girl who had become pregnant by him. The housekeeper saved her at the last minute. It was then that Bielicka began to think about returning to Duszyński. However, he was already involved with another woman. The actress’ disappointments in love resulted in her stopping engaging in further relationships. As she quotes years later:
I paid the devil for my career with personal happiness. My life is successful, but I don’t have the warmth of family, I get all my pleasure from performing. Well, you can’t ask for too much!
Hanka Bielicka lamented that she couldn’t love. She chose loneliness
Although Bielicka was not a classic beauty, she had admirers, but they could not replace her feelings. Years later, she admitted that she was unlucky in love. She said her love was work. She mentioned her marriage and intimate life:
My husband liked me very much, maybe he even loved me in a specific way, but he treated love as something that was unconditionally due to him, and I simply couldn’t give it to him. For me, my head worked harder than my lower body. Either I had dormant sex or I didn’t find my man. I feel like I’m missing something, but I don’t regret it because I don’t know what to regret.
After the love affair, Hanka Bielicka never got involved with anyone again. The actress died on March 9, 2006 in Warsaw, a day after surgery for an aortic aneurysm. At the end of her life, in an interview for Kielce, she confessed:
God created me to talk, not to love. I am alone by choice.
