“The Lord of the Rings”. Frodo didn’t know Legolas’s name? Years later, a new detail was found in the film trilogy

Legolas says only one sentence to Frodo in the film. But did Frodo know who was speaking to him? A crazy Internet theory regarding Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy has been proven. There is evidence in the form of frames.

More than 20 years have passed since the premiere of the first part of Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings”. However, there are still quite complicated theories about what is happening on screen between the main characters. One of them, found in the depths of the Internet, says that Frodo had no idea what Legolas’s name was – from the first to the last part. But let’s start from the beginning.

“Lord of the Rings”. Does Frodo know this elf’s name?

Everything is clear in the book – Frodo meets Legolas during a meeting with Elrond. Although they do not introduce themselves, the narrator’s context suggests that Frodo knows everyone gathered in Rivendell by name. The situation is different in the film.

And here Legolas appears at the Council of Elrond. We see him arrive in the valley and jump off his horse, looking around curiously. Later, we see him at the council, but when his name is uttered by Aragorn (“Havo dad, Legolas…”), Frodo is already in a trance caused by the Ring and the brawl that engulfs the council. In a moment, Gimli will try to smash the jewel with an axe, everyone will argue and Frodo will capitulate and undertake a mission that will change his life.

This will also be the only moment when Legolas turns directly to Frodo, offering him his bow on the expedition to Mordor. Our main character, however, never once in the entire three films says Legolas’ name out loud, as if he didn’t know him. He talks about Aragorn, Gandalf, his hobbit friends, even Gimli and Boromir get it. But not Legolas. This is where the rather crazy theory that Legolas was not known to Frodo by name came from. This idea has spawned many threads on discussion forums so that someone finally takes the time to watch the trilogy carefully – but really carefully, including stopping and zooming in on specific frames. Only this allowed us to draw the conclusion that theory is theory, but the truth is different.

“Lord of the Rings”. Yes, Frodo knows that Legolas is Legolas

The confirmation came at the very end of the film trilogy, just before Frodo set off for the West. There is a shot of Frodo writing the final pages of his story in a large book, which he then gives to Sam. Legolas’ name is written here, but you have to be quick and stop the movie to spot it.

Although this still does not prove that Frodo knew Legolas’ name during his journey – he may have only learned it later, for the purposes of writing the book (“Sam, what was the name of the elf with whom we traveled from Rivendell?”, “I don’t know “Mr. Frodo, he never introduced himself to us”).
