She was born on July 31, 1937 in France in a family of Polish immigrants. Her life was marked by suffering from the beginning. Her father, a miner, died of pneumoconiosis when she was 4 years old. Then her older brother replaced him at work, but soon he lost his battle with tuberculosis. Edyta Piecha’s mother could barely make ends meet. In order not to lose her company apartment, she agreed to marry a communist from Silesia. For the 7-year-old, it was the beginning of a real nightmare. – He hit me with a belt and predicted that I would grow up to be a whore – in “Wysokie Obcasy”.
Her difficult childhood motivated her to change her life. The trip to the USSR was a breakthrough for her
After moving to Poland, the family grew by another child. The stepbrother focused all the parents’ attention, and Edyta began to feel completely unnecessary. In the evenings she dreamed of escape, which she finally decided to fulfill. Contrary to the expectations of her mother, who wanted her to become a seamstress, she graduated with honors from a pedagogical high school in Wałbrzych. In the meantime, she took part in a competition in which she won the Leningrad University index and a scholarship. She packed up and left without a word. – Childhood tragedies didn’t break me, they only hardened me. I wasn’t afraid to go out into the world, she said years later.
She finally began to live her life to the fullest and pursue her greatest passion, i.e. Already during her studies, the renowned composer and arranger, Szura Broniewicki, engaged her in the group Team, of which she eventually became a soloist. – In the 1960s, he wrote the first Soviet twists for me. Following his advice, I took the microphone off the stand and was the first to start talking to the audience. He created me as an artist, she said. She made her debut on stage in 1955 during New Year’s Eve, singing the song “The Red Bus”, and the listeners fell in love with her. It was even said that it was for Russians. It quickly turned out that this marked the beginning of not only her career, but also her love.
She became a star on stage, but she was unlucky in love. She stepped on the wedding carpet three times
After only a year of knowing each other, Piecha married Broniewicki. However, it was not successful from the beginning. It is true that they were united by a common passion and professional obligations, but constant quarrels only made them distance themselves from each other. 5 years after the wedding, their daughter, Ilona, was born and, despite expectations, the birth of the child did not end the crisis, but even deepened it. The composer was constantly jealous and suspected of betrayal, although he himself had problems with remaining faithful. Eventually, he also began to belittle her successes, which ultimately led to a divorce, which was formalized in 1976.
Broniewicki claimed that Piecha would achieve nothing without him. During one of the arguments, he even said that “without the Team he is nothing.” It turned out that without his help, she mattered as much in the industry as before. She founded her own band and began to perform regularly. She has performed on the biggest stages in the world, including: twice in Olympia and five times in Carnegie Hall. Her star has not waned for over 67 years. Privately, however, she was a bit less fortunate. After divorcing her first husband, who was the love of her life, she got married twice more, but each of these relationships ended with a broken heart. Finally, she decided to focus solely on her career. – Apparently, female happiness was not destined for me, only success – she said in .
