Two days ago we celebrated a very sad anniversary for our country. On October 22, 2020, Julia Przyłębska’s Constitutional Tribunal deprived women of the right to legal abortion due to severe, irreversible damage to the fetus. This caused a wave of violent protests to sweep across Poland, in which hundreds of thousands of Polish women took part.
Since then, there has been ongoing persecution of women fighting for the right to abortion or undergoing it by the police and the prosecutor’s office. Over the last three years, Poland has been shocked by the tragic stories of young, pregnant women who died in hospitals where doctors delayed the decision to terminate their pregnancies.
The last resort for women in need of abortion are non-governmental organizations. Their activists risk their own safety by allowing dozens of women access to the procedure, which in Western European countries is treated as part of regular medical services. An example is Abortion Without Borders, which steadfastly supports women. In one of their last posts, activists summarized the last years of their work.
The numbers are most impressive. Abortion Without Borders has helped thousands of Polish women since the announcement of the Constitutional Tribunal’s verdict. The activists published a post on social media detailing specific statistics.
In the three years since the Constitutional Tribunal’s judgment, Abortion Without Borders has helped a total of over 125,000. people from Poland have access to safe abortion. Over the last three years, the Abortion Without Borders network has allocated over PLN 3,675,000 for this assistance. zloty

“Trips, clinic stays”
Over the last 12 months, thanks to the organization, over 46,000 people have gained access to safe abortion. What else? Since October 22, 2022, “1,235 people have benefited from the support of the entire Abortion Without Borders initiative in organizing abortions in the second or third trimester in a foreign clinic,” activists point out.
496 people who contacted organizations belonging to Abortion Without Borders with a request to travel abroad in the second or third trimester disclosed information about the occurrence of fetal defects. Abortion in the Netherlands and England is available on request, so the person does not need to give a reason for the abortion
– notes the Abortyczny Dream Team on Facebook.
“The total amount of support provided by all organizations that are part of Abortion Without Borders is over PLN 1,675,031, of which PLN 1,013,755 was allocated for treatments, trips, and stays in a foreign clinic,” the activists say.
This is how Abortion Without Borders helps Polish women. Millions for trips abroad
The remaining part of the specified amount covered the cost of subsidies for abortion pills. In turn, over 4,864 people used the free Abortion Without Borders hotline. Among them were 316 refugees from war-torn Ukraine.
More and more people from Poland with fetal defects go to France and Belgium, because this premise operates without restrictions in these countries, and fetal defects are treated as a physical and/or mental threat to the health of the pregnant person.
– we read in the published post. The youngest person to receive help from Abortion Without Borders was 13 years old. A total of three people under 15 years of age managed to organize a trip abroad for the procedure.
“Abortion should be an ordinary medical service”
“You are amazing”, “You are the best!” – we read in the comments under the Abortion Dream Team’s entry.
Subverting the Polish state when abortion should be an ordinary medical service
Hell, in 1991 my mother had an abortion due to financial difficulties, although no one actually checked. Completely legal and no one made a big deal about it. An abortion like many others. I will add that we lived in the countryside and abortion was available and reimbursed from public money
