On the set of “The Bloody Moon”, Scorsese assembled an absolutely stellar cast. The film brings together two of Scorsese’s favorite actors, Oscar winners Robert de Niro and Leonardo di Caprio. As well as Brendan Fraser, Oscar winner for last year’s sensational “The Whale”, Jesse Plemons and two wonderful actresses with Indian roots, Tantoo Cardinal and Lily Gladstone.
These roots are important here, as the film is the story of the Osage Indians. A story based on facts – or more precisely, on the famous book by David Grann, describing a series of mysterious Osage deaths. They are directly related to the oil that flows in the land belonging to the Indians. White people will do nothing to take over these valuable deposits.
The central character of the film is William Hale, known as the King, played by Robert de Niro. A powerful man who is considered the Osage’s benefactor, patron and friend, but in fact he manipulates them and kills entire families without remorse. And he does it as if he was almost acting for their good. Only de Niro could handle such a role…
William Hale is the uncle of Ernesto, played by Leonardo di Caprio, a not-so-bright war veteran. Ernest has two weaknesses: he loves money very much and the Indian Mollie. And his uncle gradually makes him realize that these two loves cannot be reconciled.
Di Caprio may win an Oscar for this role – but Lily Gladstone, who plays Mollie, is equally likely to receive the most important awards. This tragic character gradually realizes that her beloved husband, Ernest, has a surprising amount to do with the death of her sisters and mother. Mollie is the heart and soul of this story. She fights for justice and goes to Washington to ask the president himself for help. And her life is in more and more danger with every passing moment.
“The Time of the Blood Moon” is a story about emancipation, about love, about extraordinary fortitude… And also about the fact that money, yes, rules the world – but not everything can be bought with it.
It’s really worth going to a world that no longer exists for three and a half hours and watching “The Bloody Moon”.
