Do you open the windows and smell the smell of garbage? Check whether he is standing too close. The regulations are clear

Garbage containers in housing estates can be problematic, especially when they are too close to the building. If there is an unpleasant smell and noise from waste disposal reaching your windows, it is worth checking whether the containers have been placed at the appropriate distance. How much should it be?

Finding the perfect place for a garbage bin in a housing estate can be really problematic, because if it is too close, residents will certainly start complaining about the bad smell. On the other hand, if it is placed too far away, you may complain about having to walk with the bags for longer periods of time. So how can we set it up so that it doesn’t get in the way and doesn’t break any regulations?

Where should garbage bins be located in the estate? The law is clear

The law clearly and clearly defines where the garbage bin should be located in front of the building. As we can read in, and more specifically in Chapter 4, the distance between bins and containers in which solid waste is collected should be at least:

  • 10 m from and doors to buildings containing rooms intended for people,
  • 3 meters from the border of the building plot (it may be closer if it connects or touches a garbage bin on a neighboring plot),
  • 10 m from a children’s playground, sports field or other recreational places.

How far from the building can a garbage container be? There is one exception

But that’s not all, because the regulations also take into account the maximum distance from the last, furthest entrance to the containers. This, in turn, cannot be more than 80 meters. The exception are buildings in closed areas. This means that garbage containers should be at a distance of at least 10 meters from the block, but no further than 80 meters. It is worth knowing that in the case of reconstruction of existing buildings, the current distances may be reduced by up to half (but not more), but only after obtaining the opinion of the sanitary inspector.

The bad smell from the local garbage can reaches your windows? Measure the distance

Importantly, distance should be taken into account when determining the appropriate position to place garbage in a straight line from windows and doors and in the narrowest place. However, it may happen that the measurement was taken from the wall on which the window is located, which is why it is slightly distorted. If you are struggling with unsightly waste coming from the garbage, it is worth measuring it and, if any irregularities are found, reporting this fact to the building supervision. The authority may decide to move the shelter and containers.
