He Economic Operation Committee of the National Interconnected System (COES) reported that the marginal costs of electricity in Peru averaged US$170 MWh in the month of August.
According to the COES Monthly Bulletin – August 2023, marginal costs in the seventh month of the year registered an increase of 447.14% compared to the same period of the previous year, when they averaged US$31.10 MWh.
Energy production in August 2023 including imports was 4,908.301 GWh. This magnitude represents an increase of 4.06% compared to August 2022 production.
In the month of evaluation, hydroelectric production represented only 31.93% of total production, while thermoelectric generation from Camisea gas reached 53.38% of the total.
Electricity generation with wind and solar energy (RER) accounted for 8.15% of national production. On the other hand, thermoelectric generation with Diesel, the most expensive source of all and responsible for the general increase in the system’s cost, reached 4.23%.
The water stress of the system is responsible for this situation. According to the same COES report, the useful volume of the main reservoirs and lagoons of the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN) remained downward due to lack of rain at the end of the monthly period.
