In England it is called Houndstooth, i.e. dog’s tooth, and in France Pied-de-Poule – chicken’s foot. In Poland, its name refers to the Spanish word pepita. Of course, it’s a houndstooth pattern, which some people simply call a kicked checkered pattern. Its history dates back to the 17th century, when shepherds in Sweden began to wear lambs in woolen, tweed rugs, on which this popular pattern appeared for the first time.
