Gaitu, starts a campaign to collect voices in Basque

Collect thousands of voices to teach Basque to new technologies and guarantee the presence of Basque in the digital sphere. It is the objective of the campaign called Gaitu which has been launched by the Basque Government, Government of Navarra and the Public Office of the Basque Language (Hiruko Ituna).

Under the motto ‘Batu ditzagun gure ahotsak-Let us unite our voices’, citizens are asked to enter the gaitu.eus portal to record their voice and thus contribute to the development of Basque and Basque culture. “The more voices and recordings, the broader the database of material with which the new technologies will work,” highlighted the promoters of the initiative.

The campaign was announced this morning at an event organized at the Tabakalera center in San Sebastián. The Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, Bingen Zupiria, the Second Vice President of the Government of Navarra and Minister of Memory and Coexistence, Foreign Action and Basque, Ana Ollo, as well as agents related to Basque and the new technologies, among others, members of Librezaleak or the Bagera association.

In his speech, Zupiria has stated that minority languages ​​”are not in the aspirations of large technology companies” so Basque must be introduced by Basque speakers themselves. The objective, he added, is to obtain “thousands of voices, thousands of hours of recording in Basque”, since “for machines to understand and speak” Basque, first “they must be taught.”

For its part, Ollo has highlighted the coherence of this project with the lines of work that Euskarabidea and has highlighted that the strategic planning of the Navarrese department of Memory and Coexistence, Foreign Action and Euskera established as a priority turning information and communication technologies into a natural niche own development of Basque.
