The action of “Quack” takes place in the interwar period. The creators of the film inform the audience in quite detail when – in one of the scenes we see the obituary of Professor Rafał Wilczur. We learn from it that he died in 1920. Later, the inscription “15 years later” appears on the screen, which means that we meet Antoni Kosiba in 1935.

One of the viewers drew our attention to the discrepancy in the dates. Well, in the scene in which Marysia comes to Radoliszki after her mother’s death, a fence with the inscription “K+M+B 1936” appears behind her. Since such inscriptions appear on Epiphany, which falls on January 6, but not earlier, it means that the year must already be 1936.

It is worth noting that the novel by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz was published in 1937 and was quickly adapted into a film. Michał Waszyński cast Kazimierz Junosza-Stępowski as Wilczur/Kosiba. After over 40 years, Jerzy Bińczycki played this hero in Jerzy Hoffman’s work, and after another four decades in Gazda – Leszek Lichota.

– We knew that people would compare our adaptation with the previous ones, and some would even say that the legend cannot be touched. But in my opinion, he is moving and the legend of prof. The language of cinema changes as much as our sensitivity, which is why certain stories need to be updated, says Lichota.
– With “The Quack” AD 2023, we resurrected the extinct (at least in Polish cinematography) genre of classic melodrama. This obliges us – we wanted to create a realistic fairy tale about love, noble in its image and flowing in its narrative – says the director about the Netflix film. – I wanted our “Quack Man” to be a purely cinematic experience, broad in its scope, epic in staging and stylistically elegant. However, the most important goal was to bring real emotions and sincere emotions to the screen. We knew that this was a sine qua non condition for the success of the entire project – he emphasizes.
