Michael Gambon has died. The actor known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films was 82 years old.

The actor’s family announced the death of Michael Gambon. According to the Daily Mail, the artist died at the age of 82 in hospital surrounded by his loved ones. “We are devastated by the news we have to share,” said the actor’s wife and son. Gambon died after contracting pneumonia. “We ask you to respect our privacy during this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,” add the artist’s relatives.

Sir Michael John Gambon developed his acting career at the Royal National Theatre. He also played an unforgettable television role in the BBC series “The Singing Detective”. Fans will remember him as Professor Albus Dumbledore. The actor took over the role of Headmaster of Hogwarts after the death of Richard Harris in 2002.

During his 60-year career, the actor received four BAFTA awards, six Golden Globes, and in 1999, Queen Elizabeth II knighted him for his contribution to the development of the theater.

Gambon starred in many theater interpretations of William Shakespeare’s works, such as “Othello”, “Hamlet” and “Macbeth”. He was nominated many times for the Olivier Award, and won the distinction for his roles in the plays “A Chorus of Disapproval”, “A View from the Bridge” and “Man of the Moment”. In 1997, he made his Broadway debut in “Skylight”. For his performance, he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor.

He appeared on the big screen for the first time in the film “Othello” from 1965. Later he starred in “The Diary of a Turtle”, “Paris by Night” and the production of “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover”. In the 1990s, he appeared in “The Toys” alongside Robin Williams and in “The Headless Rider” with Johnny Depp. In 2004, he played Albus Dumbledore for the first time in the film “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. One of his last roles was Bernard Delfont in the 2019 film “Judy”.
