Union accuses GM and Stellantis of attacks against strikers in the US

The president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, Shawn Fain, accused this Thursday General Motors (GM) and Stellantis from “propitiate” attacks against workers in strike after several incidents in which members of information pickets were injured.

Fain said that “It is a shame that GM and Stellantis are hiring scabs and doing nothing while the lives of their own workers are injured and threatened”according to a video posted on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter.

In Michigan, five members of a picket line were run over at the entrance to one of the striking GM workplaces by a van leaving the facility. Two of the injured had to be hospitalized, according to Fain.

“In Massachusetts, another member and a state senator were hit by cars while picketing outside a Stellantis distribution center. And in California, scabs pointed guns at our members at another Stellantis parts center,” Fain stated.

“We condemn this violence that GM and Stellantis are promoting. “We will not tolerate these attacks on our members who exercise their constitutional right to strike,” added the union leader.

On September 15, the UAW declared an unprecedented strike against GM, Ford and Stellantis, the three main automobile manufacturers in the United States, after several months of negotiating without results for the signing of a new collective agreement.

The strike currently affects a total of 40 GM and Stellantis workplaces and one at Ford. In total, about 18,300 workers at the three companies have walked away from their jobs.

On Friday, Fain plans to announce the extension of the strike to other plants of the three manufacturers due to the lack of progress in negotiations.
