The municipal library of Burriana has been forced to remove the thematic books LGTBI with “sexual content” of the children’s and youth area. This has been due to an order imposed by the Department of Culture of the City Council of the Castellón town of the town to comply with the law and the duty of “protect minors from pornographic content” and “scandalous”.
This was confirmed this Wednesday by the Burriana Councilor for Culture, Jesús Albiol of the Vox party, after the municipal group of Commitments has previously denounced that with this “unilateral” measure and without any technical report a is exercised “censorship” around family and sexual diversity. The Vox councilor, who is also an autonomous deputy of this party in Les Corts Valencianes, explained in a statement from his party that now these books are going to go to a special area for adults that has been created for this purpose in the Burriana public library.
Albiol has “immediately” ordered the withdrawal of these specimens in compliance with the article 20 of Law 4/2011, of March 23, on Libraries of the Valencian Community (which corresponds to Burriana because it has more than 25,000 inhabitants), since the regulations contemplate that books with content on sexual diversity, gender or sexual development must remain in a specific section and not in spaces accessible to minors, as was done until now. “It is our duty to protect minors, the most vulnerable, and keep them away from books with content that we could classify as pornographic and that are not appropriate for their age,” says the mayor.
According to Albiol, “the During these years, the left has tried to pervert minors with some scandalous books with explicit sexual content that are not educational at all; some texts that have been introduced both in public school libraries and in municipal libraries and it is something that at Vox we are not going to consent to; “Children are children and childhood must be protected.” For his part, the municipal spokesperson for Compromís, Vicent Granel, has denounced that “This decision is made without any technical report and with the only unilateral decision” of a councilor who, in his opinion, “only wants his ideas to be known and hide the others.”
It is not the first censorship
This is not the first time that Albiol’s decisions regarding the content of the municipal library have generated controversy, since last July the mayor of Vox announced that they were going to withdraw subscriptions to five magazines in Valencian or Catalan such as Cavall Fort, El Temps, Camacuc, Enderrock and Llengua Nacional Magazine. However, the magazines returned to the library after the demonstrations by neighbors who protested against this decision and which was also criticized by Compromís.
Now, from this municipal group they denounce again what they consider to be an attitude of the Vox councilor of the “hatred that a diverse society awakens in him.” Granel has assured that they are books in which “very basic concepts are explained to children at home. In his opinion, Vox “wants to eliminate any possibility of freedom to choose what can be read in the municipal library.” “We are going to request a technical report from the municipal library to endorse a decision that we think censors children from books that, according to the Compromís councillor, only inform and explain and “do not attack, bite, or anything similar to what the councilor thinks about censorship.”
