Netflix’s “Quack” is the same story that was filmed in the 1930s by Michał Waszyński and in the 1980s by Hoffman, but the scriptwriters also introduced a lot of changes. One of them is to increase the role of a woman who is interested in Antoni Kosiba when he goes to the mill. Bożena Dykiel in Jerzy Hoffman’s film appears in only two or three scenes (and she still makes an impression with her image of a rosy-cheeked girl with a braided crown, who wavers between showing her heart and her own interests). We get to know Zośka from the mill in Radoliszki better. And it’s impossible not to fall in love with her, and Anna Szymańczyk has a lot to do with it.
Netflix’s “Quack” is brilliantly cast
I don’t want to reveal the details of the plot of the version directed by Michał Gazda to those who haven’t seen the new “Quack” yet, but I must draw your attention to this actress. Her character is a participant in some of the funniest, but also one of the most touching sequences of scenes that can be seen in the Netflix production. The make-up artists also did a great job – they brought out the natural beauty of a woman from the 1930s who spent her entire life in the village, doing hard work, in a contemporary actress.

Although “The Quack” is essentially a story about Kosib (the excellent Leszek Lichota!) and his daughter (not as ethereal as Anna Dymna, different but good in the role of the slightly modernized Marysia Maria Kowalska), both the version from the 1980s and the new one are very well cast in each role.
Everyone remembers Artur Barciś as Wasylko – now Łukasz Szczepanowski is great in the role of Michał. Completely different, but equally interesting, is the performance of Mirosław Haniszewski as Rafał Wilczur’s collaborator, played in such a memorable way by Piotr Fronczewski. I could also mention the new heir – Leszek Tenczyński, played by Ignacy Liss, and his mother (Iza Kuna), and Piotr Rogucki, Mikołaj Grabowski and Paweł Tomaszewski, who played small but memorable roles. However, if I were to point out the greatest acting discovery of this film, it would be Anna Szymańczyk.
Anna Szymańczyk – who is the actress from the new “Quack”?
The actress was born in 1987 in Olsztyn and graduated from the Theater Academy in Warsaw. She made her debut with the role of Mrs. Zero in the play “Counting Machine” at the 6th Floor Theater in Warsaw. She received a special award at the 18th Festival of Theater Schools in Łódź in 2010. Green eyes, brown hair, 172 cm tall, knowledge of English and German – this is what we learn from her business card at the acting agency. Perhaps you know her, for example, from the role of Jola in “The Century of the Guilty”, Olga in “Szadzia”, or maybe Kaśka in “Don’t Worry About Me”?
On the website of the Dramatyczny Theater you can learn that the actress played in diploma performances directed by Agnieszka Glińska, Jan Englert and Cezary Morawski. She took part in the musical performance “There is no solidarity without love” directed by Maciej Wojtyszko with music by Krzesimir Dębski. He cooperates with the Stu Theater in Krakow, as well as with the Polish Radio Theater. He has played film and television roles (including dubbing). At Dramatyczny he now plays, among others, in “Ferdydurke” and “Mrs. Dalloway”, and earlier, e.g. in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”:
– I went to drama school to play in the theater because my passion for theater came from literature and thinking about literature and words, about language, but I am aware that in our country one thing drives the other – when you have a famous face, a recognizable face. for a certain circle, it is easier to get into certain theaters – in an interview with Radio Olszyn, admitting that she would really like to play in a farce. She proved her talent for comedic scenes in “The Quack”, in my opinion, without a doubt.
