Are vegans discriminated against in Polish sanatoriums? “Religion is a private matter”

Currently, it is very difficult to find a sanatorium where a stay co-financed by the National Health Fund includes a plant-based diet as a basic option. This problem was recently described by Anita Dmitruczuk and Aleksander Gurgul from “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

Many people believe that staying in a sanatorium is a great way to relax and recover. It is therefore not surprising that such tournaments are extremely popular. When going to a sanatorium under the National Health Fund, we only cover the costs of accommodation. In 2023, it may range from over PLN 200 to even PLN 858 in 21 days. The final amount depends on the date (it is most expensive in spring and summer) and the room standard (single rooms with a bathroom will cost the most).

Vegetarians and vegans pay more in Polish sanatoriums

Interestingly, the standard of stays also includes information about proper diet. , you usually have to pay extra for vegan or vegetarian food. – Finding a sanatorium where a stay co-financed by the National Health Fund would include a plant-based diet as a basic option is almost a miracle – we learn from the text.

For example, the sanatorium in Dąbki charges an additional fee of PLN 25 per day in such cases. What’s more, the center instructs its patients. “According to the National Health Fund, patients’ diets due to their worldview and religion (vegan, vegetarian diet) are a private matter of the patient and have no right to influence the collective nutrition provided by the sanatorium.” However, the Cieplice Spa reminds people about a vegetarian diet that “improper nutrition may lead to anemia.”

“We have such inquiries, but we do not include it in the diet”

Can we talk about discrimination in such cases? Journalists of “Gazeta Wyborcza” contacted Krzysztof Kumor from the Polish Anti-Discrimination Law Society regarding this matter. – We are talking about unequal treatment in access to services, unless of course the reason for such a difference in payment for a traditional and vegetarian diet has a strong economic basis, i.e., for example, that plant-based nutrition is simply more expensive than meat-based nutrition, providing a similar amount of nutrients and calories – explained the expert.
