Do you throw the leftovers after dinner into the organic waste bin? In many Polish homes it is still done badly

Are you wondering what bio-waste is and which container to throw it into? This type of garbage is one of the more problematic issues. It turns out that not all food leftovers from dinner should go to bio waste.

Every human activity creates waste. The need to segregate them is the responsibility of each of us, which is of great importance for the condition of our planet. In Poland, we segregate waste into four fractions: glass, metals and plastics, paper and bio-waste. Responsible sorting of waste often also allows for its reuse. One of the more problematic issues is the segregation of organic waste. And in this case there are many exceptions to the rule.

What is BIO waste? Check what exactly we include among them

Biodegradable waste appeared in Polish law in 2017. BIO waste is nothing else than organic waste that is biodegradable, i.e. it can be composted. Therefore, these are all of plant origin, including: peelings, rotten or rotten fruit, mown grass, dry leaves, shredded branches, sawdust and bark, or are made from food leftovers, e.g. fruit and vegetable leftovers, bread leftovers, coffee or tea grounds. They undergo a natural decomposition process, and selected organic remains can be used to produce compost. In accordance with the principles of segregation, this type of waste should be thrown into a brown container.

What kind of garbage cannot be thrown into the BIO waste container? This may come as a surprise to many

It often happens that the biggest problem with segregation is that waste that should not be in them ends up in individual containers. The same applies to bio-waste used to produce compost. To meet appropriate standards, they should be free from fat, dairy products and meat. Therefore, we should not place in the brown container, among others: animal bones, meat remains, bones, potatoes with sauce, bread and butter, edible oil, animal excrement, coal ash, medicines, impregnated wood, chipboard and MDF fiberboard, earth and stones, as well as other municipal waste. Most of the leftovers left after dinner should therefore go into the mixed waste bin. The problem may also arise in the case of an ordinary egg, which, contrary to appearances, is not organic waste at all, but only its shell. The yolk and egg white should be placed in the black mixed waste container.
