Why are leaky windows a problem in winter?
Leaking in winter is a problem primarily because it promotes heat loss. Therefore, not only the comfort of staying in the apartment decreases, but also the heating bills will be higher. In the past, putty, silicone or mounting foam were used for sealing. While this solution worked well in winter, in summer it did not provide proper air circulation inside.
Therefore, modern PVC windows use a more flexible solution. It is about the possibility of sealing the window in winter or unsealing it in summer. This is a good solution that helps create health-friendly conditions indoors.
Window adjustment for winter – basic information
Why is winter regulation so important? There are at least several reasons for its use. At the same time, we still rarely unseal them in spring and seal them in the autumn-winter season. It’s a pity, because this is a relatively simple task and everyone can do it on their own.
Without winter window adjustments, we are exposed to:
- higher bills during the heating season due to the lack of window sealing;
- increased risk of dampness and fungus in rooms caused by improper air circulation in warm months.
Technically speaking, it’s all about adjusting the seal pressure. Modern windows have a pressure roller in the form of a pin. Thanks to it, you can easily control the level of leakage. Simple procedures make it possible to regulate the air flow between the inside of the house and the outside space. In summer, the circulation should be quite high, and in winter it should be reduced.
How to seal windows for winter?
How to seal for winter yourself? The issue itself may seem complicated, but it is only an impression. Virtually anyone can handle it – of course, as long as you take into account a few basic steps that need to be taken to adjust the tightness of the window.
What needs to be done first? The first action is to open the window. There are metal rollers on its fittings that are easily visible. Their location is not accidental: most often they are located at the top of the fittings, in the middle and at the bottom.
You will need an Allen key to seal the window. Thanks to it, you can press the locking rollers so that they are closer to the seals. The adjustment itself has already been made. You also need to check whether the window closes properly. If the pressure is too strong, it may cause problems with closing. It is worth taking into account the fact that pressing the seal may cause the handle to work harder. This is normal and should not cause any concern.
What about balcony windows? In their case, winter regulation is also very important. Fortunately, an identical system is used here, with metal rollers to regulate the air flow.
