“Friends”. Why did Ross’ wife disappear from the show so quickly? The reason is surprising

Viewers who cheered the relationship of Rachel Green and Ross Geller from “Friends” were initially disappointed when the hero married Emily Waltham. However, the actress did not stay in the cast for long – after only a dozen or so episodes she disappeared. Many people wondered then why – the answer can be found in the memoirs of James Burrows – one of the directors of “Friends”.

Over the years, the memories of one of the directors of the “Friends” series, included in the book “Directed by James Burrows”, have become a source of many interesting facts about the production loved by millions of viewers. We learn from it, among other things, why the actress, who plays the role of Ross Geller’s wife, disappeared from the cast so quickly.

The actress who played Emily Waltham wasn’t funny?

“She was nice, but not very funny,” said Helen Baxendale in his memoirs, one of the directors of “Friends.” As James Burrows stated, there was no real chemistry between the show’s marriage. – Schwimmer had no one to bounce off of. It was like clapping with one hand. In sitcoms and all kinds of romantic comedies, humor is just as important as chemistry. Ross’s new girlfriend should be as funny as Rachel, as you can read in Burrows’ book (quoted after ).

One thing saved her from being fired

As if that was not enough, Helen Baxendale as the serial Emily Waltham also did not win the sympathy of the viewers. Many of them thought that the love story between her and Geller was a big mistake. In addition – as one of the directors stated – the woman was far from the natural charisma and sense of humor of Jennifer Aniston. Despite this, Baxendale was not fired – she was saved from this by … tight shooting dates and other logistical reasons that make recasting difficult. At least that’s what James Burrows says in his memoirs.
