She shared the unusual situation on TikTok. Sam runs an account called @samincuencaon which, among other shows his everyday life, but above all, he reports everyday life in Ecuador. The tiktoker girl moved there from New York after her husband was deported. Currently, the couple is raising a daughter. They live in the third largest city of Ecuador – Cuenca.
I was told I couldn’t give my daughter the name I wanted because it wasn’t real. We had to choose another
she told her followers. The influencer explained that in Ecuador the name could not be registered because, according to officials … it simply does not exist. “The government did not believe that her daughter’s name was real at all,” the British tabloid pointed out “The Sun” also describing a story that happened to the family. Sam added that the name she chose for her daughter was considered “illegal”.
She went to register the name of her newborn daughter. She heard it was “untrue”
Sam moved to Ecuador in 2020. A year later, the couple’s first child was born – a daughter, whom the woman planned to name “Mila”. In accordance with the procedure in force in the new country, she went to the registry office to register her newborn daughter.
Imagine my surprise when I’m sitting at home with my baby, almost a month after giving birth, and my husband calls me from the Registry Office and says that her name is not her name
she said. According to officials, the child’s name was not a separate name in itself, but “a derivative of names” such as “Camila”. This was the reason why the registration application was rejected by the office.
“We can name the baby whatever we want”
After many hours of arguing with the registry office staff, Sam had to go to the registry office in person with the baby in the middle of the pandemic. However, the situation was resolved thanks to the fact that she had the citizenship of another country. “It turns out that since I’m a foreigner, we can basically name the baby whatever we want,” she said.
Although she herself was very lucky in this situation, other people from Ecuador later made her aware that this was a completely normal and common procedure – they themselves had to change their children’s names or spelling many times due to the applicable regulations.
“They should do it more often”
“My friend from Guayaquil (a city in western Ecuador – ed.) wanted to name his son Lionel – after Messi. He surrendered to the registry office only because the ‘correct name’ was Leonel,” shared one of the Internet users. “My friend’s dad forgot the name when he got to the registry office, so now he has two daughters with the same name,” another person wrote.
Same for me. Dad wanted to name me Stepfhanie, but Ecuador said no, it’ll be Estefania. They changed it when I came to the USA – confessed another Internet user. Yet another person said that sometimes such rules come in handy. “Honestly, I think they need to at least do it a little more in the US lately, with some of these names,” she stated.
