The members of the organization must now vote for their favorites until the 15 official candidates are selected.
The Hollywood Academy announced this Monday the 93 tapes that aspire to take the Oscar for Best International Film at the 94th edition of the awards, which will equal last year’s record for nominations.
‘Submersible’, a crude narrative of drug trafficking, in a new setting: under the sea
Of the 93 applicants, presented by each country, the members of the organization must now vote for their favorites until the 15 official candidates are selected, a listing known as shortlist which will be released on December 21, 2021.
It is the third year that the award is not called Best Foreign Language Film in favor of the new title of Best International Film, which as a main requirement requires that more than half of the film be shot in a language other than English.
The Ibero-American applicants are: The Fugitive, from Argentina; The Great Movement, from Bolivia; private desert, from Brazil; White on White, From Chile; Memory, from Colombia; Clara Sola, from Costa Rica; The beast and the party, from Dominican Republic; Submersible, from Ecuador; and Fire night, from Mexico.
Complete the list Cathedral Square, from Panama; Just the sun, from Paraguay; Lame Cap, from Peru; The Metamorphosis of Birds, From Portugal; The Good Patron, from Spain; The Broken Glass Theory, from Uruguay, and An Inner Gleam, from Venezuela.
Among the absences of this edition are three Latin American countries, Cuba, Guatemala and Honduras, which presented candidacy last year, although their space is occupied with other additions such as the debut of Somalia.
Nevertheless, the final list could change because the organization has warned that some of the films have not yet been released commercially (online or in cinemas) and they must do so before the voting period closes.
For its part, the institution also assured that the animated film category has 26 eligible tapes, while in the case of documentaries the number rises to 138 titles.
The Oscars will be delivered on March 27 with a gala that will return to the emblematic Dolby Theatre de Hollywood. (I)
