On April 21, 2023, the National Library published the results of research conducted in autumn 2022 on the state of Poland. Every third Pole read at least one book during the year. Although according to experts, the statistics are not bad, they could be a little higher, especially since reading has a number of scientifically proven benefits.
Why is it worth reading books? Avid readers may live longer
Everyone knows that books increase vocabulary, improve concentration or increase creativity. Did you know that reading can improve the quality of life and extend it by up to 2 years? According to scientists from Yale University, this is possible because reading helps to reduce stress. a group of over 3.5 thousand were subjected to people over 50 who spend about 30 minutes a day reading. The results are surprising. It turns out that people belonging to this group live an average of 23 months longer than those who do not read at all or reach only for magazines and journals.
Speaking of stress reduction, it is worth mentioning that reading books also has a significant impact on the quality of sleep. During the process of becoming familiar with reading, the brain enters a state of relaxation, thus informing the body that it is time to rest, which in turn accelerates falling asleep. According to the results of many studies carried out over the years, they are also of great importance for the health of elderly people who are susceptible to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Regular intellectual training of the brain improves the organ to fight this type of diseases and conditions.
Successful people are real bookworms. Who belongs to this group?
However, health benefits are not a sufficient argument for you? Perhaps the fact that successful people are true bookworms will prove more convincing. People who climb to the top in their industry focus on self-improvement of skills and constantly broadening their horizons, and reading is crucial in this, because books are a real treasury of knowledge. Proof of this are, for example, Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. Apparently, the founder of Facebook reads at least one book every two weeks, while the other gentleman, an American philanthropist and one of the co-founders of Microsoft, reads about 50 books a year.
