“Oppenheimer” divided viewers. For some, the magic of cinema, for others a three-hour quote from Wikipedia

On July 21, Christopher Nolan’s next work will hit the cinema screens. Oppenheimer is one of the most anticipated films of the year. The curiosity of the director’s fans is fueled by, for example, the words of Robert Downey Junior, who declares that the production is the best film he has starred in throughout his career. The first reviews of the production have already appeared on the web.

Weeks before the premiere of the film, the media provided moviegoers with more interesting facts about Nolan’s latest production. The director was supposed to completely abandon CGI and recreate the explosion of an atomic bomb without computer special effects. What’s more, the creator was the first in history to shoot some of the scenes on black and white film in an IMAX camera. In turn, the entire tape with the three-hour work of Nolan is almost 18 kilometers long and weighs about 270 kilograms. Not every cinema is able to handle such a format, and the nearest one to which the tape will go is in Prague.

Before the official premiere of the film, some journalists had already had the opportunity to watch and evaluate the production. Most votes can’t praise Nolan’s work enough. On Rotten Tomatoes, the production has already been rated by 153 critics, who gave “Oppenheimer” a 92 percent freshness rating.

“It’s almost a masterpiece. A well-acted, visually engaging biography,” writes Casey Chong of Fiction Horizon about the film. Critic Jim Schembbri notes that Nolan wisely avoided arrogance – “He focused on Oppenheimer’s internal conflict of conscience,” he praises. “I left the cinema with the feeling that I learned something, this screening was inspiring” – summed up Rachel Wagner. James Mottram of the South China Morning Post appreciates the film for its details. “The production is much more than a biography. It is a film for our times,” he writes.

Critics divided. Did Nolan film his magnum opus or a three-hour quote from Wikipedia?

Critics agree that Nolan has managed to turn the difficult subject matter of the film into an engaging spectacle that has no chance of boring the viewer. Although the production does not have too many action scenes and focuses on the psychology of the characters and historical details, sparks fly off the screen. Nolan has also received much praise for his thoroughness and attention to detail. In the film, even well-known motifs were to be carefully analyzed from every possible angle. There were also voices that “Oppenheimer” is Nolan’s magnum opus. Laura Chlifford of Reeling Reviews notes that it is “one of the most unusually constructed biographies in recent years”, and Andrew Bundy of Projector of Feelings calls the director a “cinema magician”.

Among the opinions melting over Nolan’s film craftsmanship, there were also slightly more critical voices. Emily Wheeler appreciates the director’s precision, but says the film “has nothing to say”. Odie Henderson of the Boston Globe did not mince words in his review of “Oppenheimer”. “This is a three-hour quote from a Wikipedia entry, not a fascinating movie,” he writes. Peter Martin of Dallas Film Now agrees, saying he felt “in the classroom” at the cinema. “A number of learned professors lectured and cursed me for being too stupid to understand the importance of the subject,” he writes. In turn, Mike Massie from Gone With The Twins believes that in “Oppenheimer” we can see three different films, and each of them deals with a completely different topic and moves within a different genre.
