From the very beginning, the director takes part in defending his homeland
Oleh Sentsov decided to join the Ukrainian territorial defense forces on the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After some time, he left for special forces. He took part in the battles in Zaporozhye, Bakhmut and Donetsk. He announced his decision at the time in a video he posted on social media.
“My name is Oleh Sentsov and I am a film director from Ukraine. I hope that international pressure on Putin and Russia will continue and lead to his defeat not only militarily but also politically, which will lead to a change in the political order, and Putin – as an international criminal – will sit in the dock of the defendants of the Hague Tribunal. No negotiations with terrorists “Only victory, only the surrender of Russia. The victory will be ours. Glory to Ukraine,” he said.
He left the front for a while to marry his chosen one
Oleh Sentsov decided to leave the battlefield only for a moment in July 2022 to marry lawyer and social activist Weronika Wełcz. According to the Ukrainska Pravda portal, his first wife, Alla, remained in the Crimea. A few years ago, it recognized the annexation of the peninsula by Russia.
The director comes from Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. In August 2015, he was sentenced by a Russian court to 20 years in a penal colony for allegedly preparing terrorist attacks on the peninsula. Oleh Sentsov vehemently denied this and said that these actions were purely political.
