The idea for a holiday song was great. Few things polarize Polish society in the summer as strongly as the phenomenon of disguising. Every year, some people get angry, others get mad that you can’t walk normally … Even I have two jokes in my head. However, “Screen” recorded by OT.TO with the accompaniment of Chopin University Big Band does not live up to the hopes placed in the song after hearing its title.
It’s summer already, so it’s time for “Screen”? The OT.TO cabaret tries to convince you that it is
OT.TO already has big summer hits. Who was born in the 80s (or is the parent of such a man) has probably heard and even sang: “Holidays, it’s holidays again…”, as well as the great hit “Lata z Radiem” – “It’s summer”, in which Zocha was looking for a “handsome like Lindy” boy she met on the train. The latter song was inspired by the cult and once extremely popular Polish Radio broadcast.
– At that time, we collaborated quite intensively with “Lato z Radiem”, and above all with Romek Czejarek. I was looking for a song that would help us to appear on this radio, although we also had “Wakacje” at that time, which were created earlier – said Ryszard Makowski in PR on the occasion of the promotion of the latest album. – I was inspired by this very motive of writing, because at that time there was no Facebook or any other media of this type, only people wrote letters honestly. These letters primarily began with the words “Dear Summer with the Radio”, and usually it was some kind of traumatic story related to the fact that the radio would help find someone you met on a train, saw on the beach or at a disco. I have always been fascinated by this belief in the radio, write to the radio and everything will work out – he says. This track has now been re-recorded and inspired the title of the album which features 10 new OT.TO songs.
All the pieces were arranged by Wojciech Kostrzewa, and his father, Piotr Kostrzewa, creator and director of the Chopin University Big Band, led his band in the recording studio. The material was recorded in the studios of Polish Radio, and the album was released by the Polish Radio Music Agency. What about this Parawan?
The authors of the song are Andrzej Tomanek (music) and Wiesław Tupaczewski (words). The creators try to play with words and their rhythm – the very first verse sounds unusual, with an accent on the last syllable in the word “umbrella”, and sometimes they use “lalala” where perhaps there was no rhyme or it was supposed to make it easier to “catch the ear”? The main vocal part is performed by Tomanek, who sings about protecting the beloved’s skin from the sun, but also from other people. And then it gets weird.
I’ll put up a screen for us because you like topless, and I’m afraid they’re staring at your breasts (…) because not everyone has the right to admire such a dick.
It’s neither modern nor funny. And although in the later part of the song, the OT.TO cabaret mainly praises the virtues of Niechorze, this song does not make me smile. Rather boring – because although I approach the quoted verse critically, at least it evokes SOME emotions. I will not speak badly about the music video, because we do not expect fireworks from cabarets in this aspect. Amateur is ok, as long as the lyrics and melody catch on. I’m having no success here.
Used to be four, now three. But different than a year ago
Today, the OT.TO cabaret consists of Ryszard Makowski, Andrzej Tomanek and Wiesław Tupaczewski. The former left the band in 2001, in the meantime he created m. controversial program “Studio Yayo” broadcast on TVP Info. Last year, he decided to perform again with his colleagues with whom he was successful on stage in the 1990s. More or less at the same time, his fourth long-term member, Andrzej Piekarczyk, said goodbye to the cabaret.
– We always wanted to create such positive emotions in the cabaret, i.e. such a “weather time” for the listeners, for the viewers – said Wiesław Tupaczewski from the OT.TO Cabaret recently in Channel 1 of Polish Radio. Well, if so, I prefer their old hits. And as a person who probably still has their tapes with “Zasmakka” and other skits that I knew by heart at the beginning of elementary school, I must emphasize that it’s not just a matter of childhood sentiment.
